Abstract: (Elsevier)
A natural thermal interpretation of the cosmological scenario is suggested in which the energy of the vacuum background is a variable function of the cosmic time; it is also shown that in this context one can easily formulate a simple phenomenological model which helps understanding, without fine-tuning, the extreme smallness of the present value of the cosmological constant.
