Abstract: (Elsevier)
A method for calculating U(1) charges in orbifold compactifications is presented. This is applied to the calculation of the anomalies of interesting orbifold models, which allows the study of their phenomenological prospects. The Fayet-Iliopoulos terms associated with the “anomalous” U(1)'s are examined. They can be exploited to lower the rank of the gauge group and obtain (in some cases) realistic models, as it is explicitly shown with the construction of an SU(3) ⊗ SU(2) ⊗ U(1) Y example.
