4D,N = 1 supersymmetry and string field theory together uniquely determine the auxiliary fields of the supergravity of 4D, N = 1 heterotic strings. The compensating fields for superscale transformations, which determine which off-shell form of supergravity is obtained, lie in the ghost sector.
