Abstract: (Elsevier)
Mass shifts are derived for open superstring leading trajectories in the adjoint, symmetric tensor and singlet representations of SO(32). Compactification to D = 4 leads to divergent expressions for the shifts of the two charged trajectories, while similar divergences cancel for the singlet states. Naively, massive charged states are removed from the physical spectrum. Massless vectors remain massless, but may be otherwise affected depending on how the low-energy limit is taken.
