The pion- and photon-induced production of η-mesic nuclear states is investigated using the Green's function method. A phenomenological spreading potential is introduced for the intermediate S 11 resonance, to which the η meson dominantly couples. The recent experimental data of (π + , p) spectra on 12 C favor a large imaginary potential. Based on our model, the (γ, p) spectra associated with low energy η-production are predicted.
