A liquid- 4 He target system with a small refrigerator has been developed for the first time to study γ- 4 He reactions at intermediate energies. The density of the target is controlled within an accuracy of 3%. The target system has been operated successfully for more than 1000 h of the experiment using the π sr TAGX spectrometer at the 1.3 GeV Tokyo electron synchrotron.
