We argue that the physics of unoriented strings in less than one dimension is described by both the orthogonal and symplectic matrix ensembles. The case of pure gravity is studied in detail; we derive differential equations which determine the susceptibility, and demonstrate the perturbative equivalence of the two ensembles.- string model
