We explicitly deform classical oscillators to multiparameter quantum oscillators which do not commute with each other. These “anyonic” oscillators lead to the construction of a consistent quantum algebra GL q ( N ) with 1 2 (N−1)(N−2) dependent parameters, some of whose features and applications we discuss.
