Abstract: (Elsevier)
We consider instanton-like transitions with multiplicity of the initial state, n , satisfying 1⪡n⪡ 1 g 2 , where g is the coupling constant. We show that at n= v g 2 the probability of such a transition, σ n ( E ), has the semiclassical form σ n (E)∼exp[( 1 g 2 )F(E/E sph,v )] . We argue that the two-particle B -violating cross section, σ 2 ( E ), satisfies the relation g 2 lnσ 2 ( E )= F ( E / E sph , v )+O( v ) and, therefore, is determined by F( E E sph ,0) , provided that the function F( E E sph ,v) has a smooth limit at v →0. We consider a low energy perturbation expansion for F( E E sph ,v) and find that it is well defined as long as v⪢( E E sph ) 10 3 ,i.e., the smoothness of F( E E sph ,v) at v →0 cannot be established within perturbation theory.
