Abstract: (Elsevier)
An approximate description of the conversion from neutrons to strange matter is used to investigate the conversion of neutron stars into strange stars through slow combustion using Bethe-Johnson's model I for neutron matter and the bag model for the quark phase. The burning time is calculated for various values of the bag constant and the initial mass of the star. Burning is found to take place on time scales from 1 seconds to a few minutes - for some parameter values a hybrid star is formed while for other the star seems to collapse into a black hole.- talk
