Abstract: (ADS)
A proper motion survey has been undertaken to search for pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars near the Tau-Aur molecular cloud. Spectra were obtained for 209 possible Tau proper-motion members selected from an initial sample of 4600 stars with V less than about 16 in an 8.9-sq deg region. Another 68 objects selected from the less-systematic proper-motion survey of Jones and Herbig (1979) were also studied spectroscopically. Only seven new PMS systems were identified on the basis of their strong Li I 6707-A absorption. The newly discovered T Tau stars have the same Hayashi track ages (about 1 Myr) as the previously discovered PMS population in Tau. There is no evidence for a population of post-T Tau stars with ages more nearly comparable to the crossing time for the molecular cloud complex (about 10 Myr). It is suggested that the stars of age greater than 10 Myr found in the vicinity of the Tau molecular complex by Walter et al. (1988) are low-mass members of the Cas-Tau B star group, and constitute a distinctly older and much more widely spread stellar population than the PMS objects seen projected against the Tau clouds.References(0)
