Abstract: (IOP)
Starting from an inhomogeneous fluid distribution in the form of dust the authors have derived an exact cosmological solution in a 5D Kaluza-Klein type spacetime. This generalizes some well known previous results in that when one arbitrary constant appearing in the solution vanishes the spacetime becomes homogeneous and reduces to some particular forms of metrics already discovered for homogeneous spacetimes. Further, their solution exhibits the desirable feature of dimensional reduction of the extra space via the successive appearances of one minimum and one maximum throughout its evolution.
