Abstract:
The positive potential energy required for inflation spontaneously breaks supersymmetry and in general gives any would-be inflaton an effective mass of order the inflationary Hubble parameter thus ruling it out as an inflaton. In this paper I give simple conditions on the superpotential that eliminate some potential sources for this mass and derive a form for the K\"{a}hler potential that eliminates the rest. I then show that K\"{a}hler potentials of this form can give rise to a new class of models of inflation, the simplest examples of which give a spectral index 1n=1/301-n = 1/30 for the density perturbations and negligible gravitational waves. Finally I point out that K\"{a}hler potentials of this form are contained in the K\"{a}hler potentials that have been derived from superstrings.
