Abstract: (Elsevier)
It is shown that the published by the VES (IHEP) group distributions of the four-momentum transfer square for the π − η and π − η ′ events cannot entirely belong to the reactions π − N → a 2 − (1320) N → π − η ( η ′) N , as it was announced in the article, because a light hadron of natural parity with the mass 100–200 MeV is needed for their description. We argue that part of the signal that the VES group observed arises from the inclusive process π − Be→ a 2 − (1320) X → π − η ( η ′) X . In this case the effect of a light hadron exchange is imitated by the quasi-elastic coherent production π − Be→ a 2 − (1320)Be → π − η ( η ′)Be. We estimate the cross section σ ( π − Be→ a 2 − (1320)be)≅100 μ b.
