The role of exchange current contributions that are associated with the short range components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction for nuclear electromagnetic and weak transitions are reviewed. The peculiar sensitivity of first forbidden β-transitions and nuclear pion production and absorption reactions to short range exchange current mechanisms is emphasized.
