Abstract: (Elsevier)
I prove that in covariant gauges quark and gluon mass-shell renormalization constants obey Ward identities analogous to those of QED: Z 1 = Z 2 and Z 4 = Z 3 . This implies that the mixing of ultraviolet and infrared singularities is not a peculiarity of dimensional regularization but a consequence of the Ward identities.
