Abstract: (Elsevier)
The combined dipion mass spectrum for 3969 events from the reactions π − p → n π + π − (8 GeV/ c ) and π + d → pp π + π − (5.4 GeV/ c ) has been studied for evidence of structure in the f o and g o mass regions. There appears to be a 4-standard deviation dip in the f o peak at ∼ 1240 MeV, although the data are not inconsistent with the assumption of a single f o resonance. We are able to resolve two distinct peaks in the g o region, at 1655 ± 4 MeV and 1764 ± 15 MeV, indicative of I = 1 and I = 0 resonances respectively. The lower-mass peak is narrow ( Λ = 20 ± 8 MeV) and is enhanced when events with low four-momenta are selected.
