Abstract: (Elsevier)
A phenomenological effective Lagrangian for the annihilation of two photons into pions first suggested by Aviv, Dass and Sawyer is generalized. The Lagrangian gives photon annihilation into both even and odd number of pions, and is free from any arbitrary parameter. All production cross sections are found to increase with increasing energies, a feature common to many effective Lagrangian models. Near threshold π + π − π 0 production is found to be comparable to that of 3 π 0 production, while at higher energies the charged mode dominates over the neutral mode, a conclusion somewhat different from that of ADS. It is hoped that a low and medium energies future experiments will be able to test the implications of this simple model.
