Abstract:
This work concerns aspects of two theoretically well motivated concepts: Inflation and unification. In chapter 2, we investigate inflationary models where inflation is associated with symmetry breaking at the unification scale. First, we review a class of supersymmetric hybrid inflation models. Taking supergravity corrections into account, we calculate the inflationary parameters and in particular the spectral index. We then discuss a related supersymmetric new inflation model. An investigation of reheating and non-thermal leptogenesis in these models follows. We also briefly discuss solving the mu problem with a Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and the moduli problem. As a non-supersymmetric example, we review inflation with a quartic (Coleman-Weinberg) potential.
