Abstract: (Elsevier)
We investigate the consequences of the Weinberg theory for neutral current reactions of the type ν( g ̄ n) + nucleon → ν( g ̄ n) + hadrons , using a quark parton model. The total cross section ratios R = σ ( ν → ν )/ σ ( ν → μ − ) and R ̄ = σ( g ̄ n→ g ̄ n)/σ( g ̄ n→μ + ) are obtained as functions of the Weinberg angle θ, and have the minimum values R min = 0.17, R ̄ min = 0.37 . An approximate relation between R and R ̄ is obtained, which is independent of the Weinberg angle: 1 2 (1−3R+ R ̄ ) = [ 27 40 ( R ̄ −R)] 1 2 . Predictions are made for the average ν and average Q 2 in comparison to those in charged current reactions. Preliminary results of the Gargamelle experiment are compared with the theory.
