Abstract: (Elsevier)
A quark model with heavy spin 1 2 quarks is discussed for the mesons with the help of a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the amplitudes 〈0| TΨ α ( 1 2 x) Ψ β (− 1 2 x)| P M j 3 jΠC 〉 where Ψ, Ψ denote covariant Dirac quark fields. The Wick-rotated BS equation with harmonic kernels of convolution type with general spin dependence is solved, starting from a new class of exact solutions of the O(4) symmetric bound state mass-zero case. It is shown that an interaction of the P + V − S type reproduces the low-mass mesons of the non-relativistic quark model lying on linear Regge trajectories. A complete list of the covariant, field theoretically normalized BS amplitudes for all mesons is given. As a first application, the decay constant of the pion, f π , and the leptonic decay constants of the vector mesons, γ V , are calculated; f π depends on the quark mass and is for heavy quarks consistent with PCAC.
