BNL Overview
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow.
Organizational Overview
The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the Phase-I & HL-LHC Upgrade Projects, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as one of the U.S. ATLAS Support Centers. The Omega Group at BNL has major responsibilities in the operations of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter, Cathode Strip Chambers in the muon spectrometer, trigger and software development, and leads several physics analyses. The group has leading roles in ATLAS Phase-I upgrade projects (Liquid Argon calorimeter trigger readout, Muon New Small Wheel, and Trigger/Data Acquisition) and the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter readout, and Trigger/Data Acquisition). The group also has strong detector R&D programs on the silicon detector.
Position Description
The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening for a two-year term Post-doctoral Research Associate to join the current effort on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in electroweak vector-boson fusion and scattering analyses on ATLAS, to conduct studies of ATLAS physics potentials for the HL-LHC upgrade, and to also participate to the characterization of novel silicon sensor technologies. The successful candidate is expected to be based at BNL but should expect extended visits at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, in addition to other international or domestic travels, as needed.
Position Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Analysis in the electro-weak sector with the ATLAS experiment.
- Participation in silicon R&D studies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in high energy physics.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python.
- Familiarity with computer operating systems such as Unix/Linux and Windows.
- Ability to work in a large collaboration.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience with large-volume data analysis
- Expertise in physics measurements or detector performance studies in a high energy physics experiment
- Demonstrated experience with laboratory instrumentation
BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
