Job description:

The Department of Physics proposes to appoint an Associate Professor (equivalent to Lecturer) or Professor in Theoretical Particle Physics with effect from 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a Tutorial Fellowship at Wadham College, under arrangements described in the further particulars. The combined University and College salary will be according to experience on a scale from £46,336 p.a. plus a housing allowance of £8,826 p.a. and access to a joint equity scheme. An allowance of £2,700 p.a. would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.

The Associate Professor will join a vigorous community of particle physicists addressing the most significant issues in our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature in and beyond the Standard Model. These challenges include the nature of dark matter, the cosmological constant problem and `dark energy’, the origin of the generations, and the stability of mass hierarchies. The purpose of this appointment is to recruit a particle phenomenologist who can develop the implications of models to enable optimal comparison with experimental data. The postholder will be expected to work closely with other particle theorists and experimentalists in the department who are involved in many of the leading experimental collaborations.

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in theoretical particle physics, or a related subject, and will have a proven record of high quality creative research in particle physics phenomenology at an international level. They will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate and graduate level, and participate in the administration of Wadham College and the Physics Department.

Further particulars, containing details of the application procedure and of the duties, may be obtained below. Enquiries may be made to Professor Subir Sarkar (subir.sarkar@physics.ox.ac.uk) or Professor John Wheater (john.wheater@physics.ox.ac.uk).

Please quote departmental reference PMC/PT/2018/1 on all correspondence. Applicants should ensure that their referees send letters by the same deadline.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 12 March 2018.
