Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Organizational Overview
The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the Phase-I & HL-LHC Upgrade Projects, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as one of the U.S. ATLAS Support Centers. The Omega Group at BNL has major responsibilities in the operations of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter, Cathode Strip Chambers in the muon spectrometer, trigger and software development, and leads several physics analyses. The group has leading roles in ATLAS Phase-I upgrade projects (Liquid Argon calorimeter trigger readout, Muon New Small Wheel, and Trigger/Data Acquisition) and the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter readout, and Trigger/Data Acquisition). The group also has strong detector R&D programs on silicon detectors and in trigger/data acquisition.
Position Description
The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening for a two-year term Research Associate to support ongoing activities on silicon R&D including timing and tracking detectors (4D) for HEP experiments, photon sciences, and medical imaging. The successful candidate is expected to focus on potential applications for Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs). The advance of this technology will have significant impact on the upgraded experiments at the CERN LHC, to which the Omega group has substantial contributions, on future experiments at the next generation of colliders in nuclear and particle physics, and in photon sciences for optical and soft X-ray detection and other imaging applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research and development of 4-D silicon sensors for charged particle and photon detection for use in high energy and nuclear physics and in photon sciences
Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in high energy or nuclear physics or in closely related fields
- Demonstrated knowledge of particle detection techniques, and specifically of silicon detectors
- Expertise in laboratory instrumentation and electronics
- Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis
- Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python
- Familiarity with computer operating systems such as Unix/Linux and Windows
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proven experience in the research and development of silicon sensors for charged particle or photon detection
- Experience in physics measurements or detector performance studies in a high energy or nuclear physics experiment
- Experience in development of instrumentation for scientific detector systems
- Familiarity with instrumentation control software development, data acquisition, and data analysis
- Ability to work in a large international collaboration
- Hands-on problem solving skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
OTHER INFORMATION:
- Domestic and international travel should be expected
- BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years
