We investigate the single particle strength distributions in the longitudinal response function of 40 Ca observed in inclusive electron scattering with momentum transfer q =2.0 fm −1 . We find that there is a considerable difference between the strength distributions of the hole and particle states. Using these strength distribution functions, we discuss the Coulomb response, occupation probabilities and momentum distributions in nuclei.
