Abstract: (Elsevier)
We show that near the critical coupling of the compact U(1) lattice gauge theory in four dimensions the magnetic monopole number density exhibits the same long-term fluctuations between pairs of metastable states as the plaquette action. The transitions between these pairs of states occur synchronously for the monopole number density and the plaquette action. The correlation between the plaquette action and the monopole number density is found to be quite strong near the phase transition, and diminishes as the coupling deviaes from critical coupling.
