Abstract: (APS)
Inverse β− decay of Ar40 to its isobaric analog state in K40 should occur with a large cross section (σ) for neutrino (νe) capture above a threshold of Eth=5.885 MeV. The νe capture is distinguished by a characteristic γ-ray coincidence signature. With a σ typically larger than that for (e,νe) scattering, the new capture mode of detection should significantly enhance the sensitivity and usefulness of liquid-Ar chambers as νe spectrometers at meson factories and for astrophysical sources such as the Sun, cosmic rays, and collapsing stars.
