Abstract: (Springer)
The diffraction dissociationsπ+pπ+(π+n),π+(π0p)\pi ^ +p \to \pi ^ +\left( {\pi ^ +n} \right),\pi ^ +\left( {\pi ^0 p} \right) at 16 GeV/c are studied in terms of the (πN) mass and momentum transfer squared. We found a narrow (πN) mass enhancement at 1.36 GeV with a width of 67 MeV over the small-t region. This enhancement is also confirmed in (πN) systems diffractively produced with π, K, or nucleon beams at different energies. The interference effect between the Deck amplitude and theP11 resonance cannot reproduce this enhancement.
